FORMER AIRMAN TO BE FORESTRY OFFICER AT REEFTON

An interest in soil erosion, developed through membership of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club and the New Zealand Alpine Club, lies behind the appointment of Mr M. J. Conway, of Christchurch, to the State Forest Service. On. November 1 he will take up a position as assistant-forester, in the Nelson Conservancy, with headquarters at Reef ton.

In January, 1942, Mi’ Conway went ■to Canada as a member of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and after training was posted to 490 Squadron, becoming. pilot of a Sunderland based in West Africa.

4 Taking his discharge with the rank of flight-lieutenant, Mr Conway went to Oxford, under a New Zealand rehabilitation bursary, and took an honours degree in forestry. Mr Conway was a schoolteacher at Hornby, Christchurch, before the war.
