JUNIOR CHAMBERS FAVOUR COMPULSORY MILITARY TRAINING
(P.A.) DUNEDIN, This Day. Support for compulsory military training in New Zealand was given by the convention of the New Zealand Junior Chamber of Commerce. The subject was discussed in committee and a statement issued later read:
“Although it is apparent that _ the question of compulsory militarytraining is controversial and political and subjects of this nature are normally outside the scope of Junior Chamber activity, delegates considered that the defence problem is of such gravity as to be above national politics. “The convention, representing young men eligible for service and fully conscious of the implications, thinks it has an obligation to make its position clear. It has decided to make representations to the Government for a system of ‘compulsory military training to be instituted at the earliest possible date.” It was decided to apply for the 1950 Junior Chamber International Congress to be held in New Zealand. The application will be heard at the congress at Brussels next year. It was decided to allot the 1949 convention to the Palmerston North Chamber.
