FOUR FRIGATES FOR NEW ZEALAND DUE IN JANUARY

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Four of the six Inch class frigates which New Zealand purchased recently from the Umted Kingdom Government are expected to be ready to sail from the United Kingdom to Malta, via Gibraltar on October 15. This was announced today by the Minister of Defence (Mr F. Jones) who added that the flotilla _ will be under the command of a senior officer, Commander L. P. Bourke, D.S.C., R.N.Z.N., who was commanding officer of H.M.N.Z.S. Taupo

The other frigates are Hawea (Lieut-Commander A C. B. Blomfield, D.C.S. R.N.) Pukaki (LieutCommander L. E. Herrick, , D. S.C., R.N.), Kaniere (Lieut-Commander B, E. Turner, R.N.Z.N.). The flotilla is expected to arrive at Malta on October 22 and after a period, of “working up,” they will sail from there on November 22 for New Zealand.

The programme the frigates will carry out from Malta is expected to : be as follows:—Arrive and leave Port ’ said on November 25; arrive and leave Suez on November 26; arrive Aden Nov. 30, leave Dec 2; arrive Colombo December 9, leave December 11; arrive Fremantle December 21, leave. December 27; arrive Auckland January 5,1949.
