CONSCRIPTION IN N.Z. OPPOSED BY FREEZING WORKERS

(P-A.) . _ CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. An immediate conference of the Federation of Labour to discuss conscription, to which the council was opposed, was called for in a resolution carried unanimously at a meeting in Wellington this week of the national council of the New Zealand Freezing Works and Related Trades Industrial Association of Workers. The resolution was as follows: — “That we implement our previous resolutions by publicly stating our opposition to conscription, and that we instruct all our delegates to district trades councils to press, for the immediate calling of a special conference of the Federation of Labour to discuss conscription. Further, that we wholeheartedly endorse the resolution published by the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union o,n September 24, 1948.” In making the resolution available for publication, Mr S. Giles, national president, and Mr H. G. Kilpatrick, national secretary of the association, said that their national council had considered the contents of the ciicular issued by the executive of the Federation of Labour. In agreement with the Waterside Workers, the Freezing Workers’ council considered that any strictures placed by the Federation of Labour executive on discussion and action in relation to the question of conscription had no basis of support in the constitution of the Federation of Labour.
