KAURI AND TOTARA TREES FOR MAORI WAR CANOE
A kauri tree to be made into a large Maori war canoe for the Ngapuhi people was selected last week by a party which visited the Puketi State Forest. The party included officers of the State Forest Service, Mr J. M. McEwen, of the Maori Affairs Department, and Mr Whautere Witehira, of Hataraua. A totara for use in the carved work on the canoe was also chosen. The project to build the canoe was delayed by a demand by the State Forest Service for a royalty of £127. This has now been waived. The kauri selected .is sft 7in in diameter at breast height and has a clean straight bole 53ft in length. It contains about 12,500 superficial feet of timber. The totara is 4ft 6m in diameter and the bole 37ft in length. Both trees will bb given by the State Forest Service. i The Maoris hope to have the canoe completed in time for the Royal visit to the Bay of Islands. The canoe will be a sea-going craft with outriggers. It is proposed to use it to welcome H.M.S. Vanguard as the warship enters the bay.. After the Royal visit it is expected the canoe will be launched on Lake Qmapere.
