HORSE MEAT FOR BELGIUM: NEW ZEALAND EXPORT
(P.A.) HASTINGS, October 7. Horses from Hawke’s Bay, as well as from other parts of the North Island, are being sent to Auckland for : killing, processing, and shipping to Belgium to supplement that nation s short food supplies. When, the horses are killed the hindquarters are frozen and the forequarters are canned in readiness for export. Buyers are seeking heavy draughts and heavy spring-carters. Hacks. are passed over as not offering a sufficient, quantity of meat. . So far 25 horses from this district have' been sent to Auckland. More of the province’s unwanted horses are now being bought for a similar purP °The authorised buyer said today that at present he could do no more than inspect the animals offered tor sale, pending settlement of a butchers strike in Auckland which is now holding up killing. Some fine types of horses are being offered by farmers who have no further use for them after the introducion ot tractors, or because they are unable to get competent teamsters to handle them. Even some fine Clydesdales, said to be fit for the show ring, are doomed to be slaughteied.
