The Minister of Works (Mr R. Semple) was granted two days' leave of absence by the House of Representatives yesterday because of illness.— (P.A.)
Mr and Mrs Tom Learmont, sen. returned yesterday to Greymouth after visiting their son, Mi 1 Tom Leannoni,in Milwaukee, and their daughter. Mrs John Drozdoff, in Vancouver. Mr and Mrs Learmont were absent from New Zealand for seven months.
Messrs J. Pascoe and T. Burley returned yesterday from Wellington, where they have been on relieveing duty with the Land and Income Tax Department. Messrs F. J. Rush and J. E. Mooney, of the Greymouth staff of the department, will leave on Monday for Wellington for a similar period of duty at head office.
Operations manager of the National Airways Corporation since 1946, Mr A. G. Gerrand has been appointed actingassistant general manager (operations). The acting-chairman of the corporation (Mr J. S. Hunter) said- last evening that Mr Gerrand had been appointed so that his services could be used in a higher capacity to cope with the corporation’s rapidly expanding services. Mr Gerrand was one of the original pilots of Union Airways when it was formed in 1935, and was service manager from 1938 to 1940. He served with the Royal New Zealand Air Force from 1940 to ,1942, and with the Royal Air Force Transport Command from 1942 to 1945?
