POSSIBILITY OF RAILWAY HOSTEL IN TOWN INVESTIGATED
The possibility of establishing a hostel for railway workers in Greymouth is again being explored by the Railways Department, and investigations in this direction were carried out last week by an officer of the department’s staff division, Wellington. It is understood that no decision has yet been made. Last week’s investigations were concerned primarily with reaching a decision on the practicability of establishing a hostel for the sole use of the department’s employees. The demand for accommodation for single railway workers in Greymouth is still a major problem, and, though 26 huts have been erected in the “compound” at the rear of the locomotive shed in Elmer Lane, these cater mainly for members of the locomotive branch.
