FELLING TREES IN GERMANY:' WINTER FUEL

The Western Military Governments in Germany have ordered the felling 1 of up to two-thirds of the forests of the Western sector of Berlin and half the trees in the city’s streets, avenues, parks, and gardens to provide fuel for Ihe coming’ x\ inicr, says Reuter’s Berlin correspondent. This programme, together with slocks on hand, will give each household dc-wi of fuel. The forests will be replanted next spring.
An official statement traced the worsening of Berlin A fuel supply Hi rough the Soviet blockade and said that (lie decision for intensive felling was taken only after exports had reported that the 'Western sector forests were much below standard.
The Act ing-Lord Mayor of Berlin, Dr Dreiclonshurg, said that the city authorities would reject for health reasons any plans to cut down Western Berlin’s forests.
