DROUGHT CUTS VICTORIAN WHEAT CROP ESTIMATE

Widespread drought has cut the Vi dorian wheat harvest c-stimatss to 30.000,000 or 35,000,000 bushels, compared with 'nearly 50,000,000 last season, involving a possible loss of £10,000,000 to the growers. The Wimmera crops are fair, but the whole of the Victorian wheat beltneeds heavy rain urgently. ■ The Northern Mallee crops are deteriorating rapidly and the weather forecasts arc unpromising. “It would be tragic if the harvest is a dismal failure when prices are so high and the world is clamouring for wheat.” said the State Minister of Health, Sir Albert Dunstan. The production drop would seriously affect the economy of the State. Even if rain fell immediately, thousands of acres will not be harvested.. , .
