SPORTING Liebestraum May-Develop Into High Class Winner

When Liebestraum won the T. 11. Lowry Memorial Handicap at Hastings Jast Saturday he scored his first win since, he was successful in the New Zealand Derby at Riecarton last November. In the meantime he had raced six times.

Liesbestraum ran two solid races at Hawke’s Bay for a third (beaten two noses) and a win, and on each occasion he was doing his best ‘work at the finish. He does not appear Io lie near the peak of his form yet, and the racing he had at Hastings should assist in his preparation for his big spring engagements (writes St Simon in the Evening Post).

Liebestraum has shown in his races that he is going to appreciate running over some ground, and if he trains on satisfactorily he should be a cup prospect as the season develops. He is a well-grown horse with plenty of range and scope and has every qualification required by a stayer.

Carnegie ran a good race to finish second to Liebestraum last Saturday. He was taken over some extra ground between the half-mile and the distance, and this cost him a winning chance. He showed that the step up to higher company will not prevent him from adding to his winning record, and he should be hard to beat in the Central Hawke’s Bay Cup at Waipukurau this week. • Desert Fox was lame when he pulled up after racing in the Lowry Memorial, in which he finished fourth. The slow pace for the first six furlongs did not suit him, and he was

carried wide on the home turn when the leading three ran out and gave Liebestraum, on the rails, the winning opening. Desert Fox came in this season in wonderful order, and it will be unfortunate if the trouble which affected him last Saturday interferes with his spring programme. Wild Note And Sweet Nymph Were Impressive Wild Note's success in the Stewards’ Handicap at Hastings last week, was well deserved. It w f as his first appearance since the Grand National meeting in August, but he does well on a light preparation, and R. J. Belcher produced him in splendid order. He trailed his stablemate, King of Quiz, to the distance and then went ahead to win attractively. Wild Note won a mile event at Trentham in January with 8.1. He may not be quite good enough for Trentham class at his present mark in the weights, but is a hard horse to head off whenever the company is just below the best. 1 The most pleasing feature of the Stewards’ Handicap was the promising performance of Sweet Nymph, who finished a close third after covering extra ground. She was the best three-year-old racing last season, and she appears to have recovered completely from the trouble which put her out of work last autumn when being prepared for the Great Northern 'Daks and St Legdr. Sweet Nymph has developed into a splendid type of mare, and if she trains on she should be a capable weight-for-age performer.

Ellerslie Scratching Huntore was scratched for the Mitchelson Cup at Ellerslie on Saturday at 3.35 p.m. yesterday. — (.P.A.)

Useful Sprinter Maintaining her recent consistency, Full of Fun finished a good fourth in the open sprint at Otaki last week. She would have been closer but for her rider being hampered for room in the final furlong. Full of Fun possesses early brilliance and she is running on better now than she did formerly.

Unlucky Runner Castlebrae was the unlucky runner in the sprint at Otaki last Saturday. He lost ground at the start, but improved quickly running down the back and was fourth at the straight entrance, where he was forced over a little extra ground. His apprentice rider was unable to get the best out of him in the run home and he failed by only a head and a nose. Castlebrae i& in solid racing condition and it should not be long before he improves on this placing. Not Good Enough

Imperial again ran an excellent race and was beaten only in the last 7 stride by Bronstar, to whom he was conceding 151 b, in the main event at Otaki last week. Imperial’s consistency keeps him up in the handicaps, but he appears to lack that little extra class which would make him a top-flight performer .

By High Caste High Jip, winner of the Breeders’ Plate at Randwick last Saturday is a brown two-year-old colt by the New Zealander High Caste from Ghippia by Windbag from Rady Elsie by Rossendale from Cerecia by Malt King from Honeywood. High Caste was one of the best performers of his time. He won 35 races and £35,547 in stakes including many weight-for-age events during a period when competition was strong. He is by Bulandshar from The Begum by Chief Ruler and was bred by the late M. A. J. McGovern, who sold him during his two-year-old season to Mr H. E. Tancred, Sydney. Form at Te Aroha

Cowper thoroughly deserved his victory in the Ralph Somers Memorial Cup at Te Aroha on Saturday, going with plenty of dash in the early stages after beginning from well out and being one of the leaders after two furlongs. Valley Boy did not come prominently into the picture until near the end and then made a most courageous effort under his 9.4. Chung Chong was better placed earlv than usual and, although he was fairly beaten, ran his best race for some time. Ascot Lad went his usual honest race for fourth and it was not until well into the straight That he was beaten. Even then he struggled on gamely. Artificer tailed to run on in the last furlong and a-half, and Conspiracy also weakened, although he was not far away. Star Performer and Honora were closer at the finish than at any other stage.

Champagne is Brilliant Champagne won her third race in succession when she scored impressively in the Pukekaraka Hack Handicap at Otaki last Saturday. She will have "to do her future racing in open company, but she is one of the most brilliant graduates in recent months and she is expected to hold her own in the higher grade. Champagne is engaged in the Desert Gold Stakes and the Wellington Guineas at the coming Trentham meeting. She is by Neptune out of the imported mare Celebrity..who showed brilliance in her restricted career. Celebrity is by Nothing Venture out of Cinna, dam of Beau Pere, Gay Shield, Dink, Mr Standfast. and Balloch. Champagne is raced by her breeder, Mr J. G. Alexander, s who will retain her for his Cranleigh Stud at Maxwell.
