WARSAW CONGRESS ISSUES MANIFESTO
WARSAW, August 29. The World Congress of Intellectuals ended last night with the issue of a manifesto which said that although the Soviet Union, Britain and the United States had saved civilisation .from Fascism, new centres of Fascism were forming in Greece, Spain and Latin America. The manifesto said that, scientific discoveries were being kept secret so that they might serve war aims.
“The congress issued a manifesto condemning ‘a handful of self-inter-ested men in America and Europe who have adopted the Fascist method of solving all problems by force of arms, once again making an attempt against the spiritual treasures of the people’s world,’ ” says the Associated Press.
“Only a few delegates refused to sign the manifesto, which proposed a world-wide peace propaganda campaign, with national congresses congresses convened in all countries, and the strengthening of international ties between cultured men of all countries.
“Thirty-five thousand Polish workers and students carrying banners denouncing ‘Wall Street imperialism,’ wildly cheered the issue of the manifesto.”
