120 DEATHS IN FOUR DAYS IN U.S. HEAT WAVE

NEW YORK, August 28. The deathroll from the stifling 100degree heat wave which has blanketed almost the entire nation for four days rose to 120 today, and still no relief is forecast. New York State, with 23 deaths, has recorded the highest number of deaths from the heat. At Charleston, in western Virginia, the temperature today soared to 105 degrees for the second successive day. Throughout the nation temperature records are being broken every hour. In New York City, council employees who had been ordered to turn oil fire hydrants because of the water shortage were attacked by street bathers. One employee was taken to hospital and the rest were given police protection. The hyrdants had beta turned on since the beginning of the heat wave to allow residents of Manhattan to cool off.
