BASKETBALL West Coast Leads In Tournament At New Plymouth

[SPECIAL TO STAR] NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day. West Coast is leading in the third grade championship at the Dominion tournament, with eight wins and one loss in nine games. The only loss was suffered in. a match which was played indoors. Yesterday West Coast had two wins in two matches. Burgess, Clarke and Harris played well for West Coast in the match in which Coast defeated Hawke’s Bay Minor by 16 to 11. The forwards did not pass as accurately as in some other matches and the Hawke’s Bay defence was good. West Coast defeated Te Kawau by 16 to 8. Clarke’s shooting was excellent and Heslop, Harris, Meldrum and Burgess all played good games. Auckland and Canterbury remain unbeaten in the first grade competition and the match between them today will decide the title. Tauranga is unbeaten in the second grade, with nine wins, ahead of Taranaki which has eight wins and two losses. Results: — First Grade. —Manawatu 21, Otago 1; Auckland 22, Southland 14; Wanganui 17, Otago 7; Canterbury 3a, Wellington 13. Second Grade.—Nelson 18, Hutt Valley 8; North Otago 12, Horowhenua 20 j Matamata 21, Waikato 15, South Canterbury 13, North Otago 11; Tauranga 22, Poverty Bay 10; Hutt Valley 17, South Canterbury 11; Waikato 14, North Otago 7; Hutt Valley 15, Rotorua 10; Poverty Bay 9, Southland Minor 6; Matamata 16, Nelson 13; Southland Minor 18, Horowhenua 8; Tauranga 16.
