U.S. Bases Bombers At English Stations
(Rec. 11.10 a.m.) WASHINGTON, August 24. The United States heavy bomber strength in Europe is now concentrated in England, where 90 Superfortresses are based. This represents nearly one-quarter of the United States total operational strength of 13 groups, totalling 400 of these heavy bombers.
The Superfortress strength in Europe until July was one group, based on Germany, but this has been transferred to England, making a total of three groups there. It is expected that all 13 groups, with the exception of one based in Guam, will rotate from English bases throughout the-winter in training operations. It was disclosed today that preparations are being made to establish a complete Superfortress maintenance depot in England. Informed quarters say this is a good indication that the spearhead of America’s most effective weapon of counter-attack can be expected to remain where it is for as long as the “cold war" retains iis present intensity. An American Army transport from Bremen unloaded more vehicles and equipment at Liverpool for the United States Air Force stationed at Warrington. The cargo included lorries, trailers, and heavy petrol wagons. The previous two transports which brought equipment came from the United States.
