ENGLISHMAN SHOT DEAD BY CHINESE IN SINGAPORE

(Rec. 10.5 a.m.) SINGAPORE. August 24. An Englishman, Mr J. N. Becker, was shot dead in the offices of his firm in downtown Singapore today by a Chinese. Mr Becker was the husband of Dorothy Cripps, leader of the British Housewives’ League and a well-known figure in England. The shooting followed an argument in adjacent offices. When the altercation developed the police were called and the Chinese seized a constable’s revolver, shot Becker dead, and fired three ineffectual rounds at a constable. The constable later grappled with the Chinese, recovered the weapon and wounded his assailant in a leg. The police are satisfied that there vms no political motive for the shooting and believe that the assailant is mentally unbalanced.
