SPORTING Phoebe’s Pride Showing Promise A t Greymouth
The Josedale Dictator three-year-old, Phoebe’s Pride, created a good impression inf running second to Sandbird over nine furlongs at the West Coast Owners’ and Breeders’ Association’s matinee meeting at Victoria Park on Saturday and she promises to develop into a useful winner for her Greymouth owner, Dr C. W. Nixon. Unfortunately for her connections’ hopes. Phoebe s Pride was balloted out of the Canterbury Three-year-old Stakes, to be run at Addington on Saturday next, but this may be all to the good, and she will have further opportunities against less seasoned opposition.
Phoebe’s Pride is trained , .by T. Gardyne and judged by her showing at the matinee meeting she is ready to race. She began well and paced evenly all the way and then finished strongly in the straight. Sandbird, however, had too much pace for the three-year-old and won nicely. Sandbird was paraded in excellent order by owner-trainer, L. Stewart. Bellegarde, a three-year-old Springfield Globe mare trained by J. C. McClure, also attracted attention in the nine-furlong event. This mare is a half-sister to a good winner, Pamelus, and will be raced on lease by McClure and Mrs J. Ogilvie, of Greymouth. Well-Related Trotter Among the novice unhoppled trotters nothing was more impressive than Barbara Woods, a six-year-old mare by Sandydale—Royal Purple, by Nelson Bingen. This mare is a sister to that good trotter, Royal Dale, and is making excellent progress, under the guidance of FI. Kennedy. She did not .settle down for about three furlongs of her race on Saturday but once on the journey properly she hit out resolutely and finished well in a hard tussle with Hardy Annual. Barbara Woods has been leased by Messrs H. Kennedy and D. Saunders, ol Greymouth. Mr G. W. Nelson’s maiden trotter, Globe Queen, now a five-year-old did not appear to be as forward as the others, but she also shows some pro-
mise She is by Springfield Globe from Paying Guest and was purchased by Mr Nelson as a yeailing. Another promising unhoppled trotter in work at Victoria Park is Efficiency, a five-year-old by Quite Sure Always, who is being educated for his breeder. Mr W. R. Coburn, of Marsden, by the veteran trainer, J. R. Coburn. Efficiency did not race at the matinee meeting but he show’s a lot of ability in his work and he comes from a good line of straight-out trotters. He is expected to develop into a useful winner. Promising Pacers Two likely looking youngsters were given a run over five furlongs at the conclusion of the matinee meeting on Saturday—Sir Charles, a three-year-old gelding by Grattan Loyal—Dawn Sonoma, and an unnamed four-year-old filly by Light Brigade from Evening Bells, a Matchlight mare which did not race. Sir Charles is typical of his family, which includes that useful pacer, Dawn Grattan, and is a natural free-going pacer. He has not done much work as yet but he shows more than usual promise. The Light Brigade filly was gaited only a couple of months ago by her trainer J. C. McClure, who will race her in partnership with Mr D. H. Manderson, and she is pleasing her connections. Mr R. Reid bred Sir Charles and the gelding will race in his colours, as have other members of the family.
