MORE CLASHES WITH BURMESE REBEL FORCES

(Recd. 2 p.m.) RANGOON, Aug. 16

An official communique reports an all-day battle between Government troops and 500 uniformed insurgents yesterday at Hmawbi. 20 miles north of Rangoon, on the road to Prome. Armoured cars and reinforcements finally routed the insurgents, who had attacked a police station. The insurgents lost five dead and 23 wounded. Another battle occurred 25 miles further north at Taikkyi, where 20 insurgents were killed.

The train service between Rangoon and Mandalay has been resumed under armed escort. The steamer service with Basein has also been resumed. It is officially announced that a number of members of the military and civil police deserted at Insein. The deserters were Karens.
