Royal Tan’s Overdue Success
Ballinagh made a game attempt to justify his favouritism for the Isling- | ton Handicap, but had to submit to a narrow defeat by the second choice. I Royal Tan. Clyde Bridge was pacemaker from the early stages to the straight entrance, but then weakened, and Ballinagh, Royal Tan, Thornbridge, and Dark Arrow drew up to him. In a spectacular finish, Royal Tan got up right on the line to win from Ballinagh, with Thornbridge a little over a length away, a length in front of Dark Arrow. Clyde Bridge was close up next in front ol Hormuz. Riverview, Broie, and Revolte. The well-supported Aganev i and Indian Dawn were always well back. , , , , I The Woolston Handicap had to be. run in two divisions, and both were j won by well-supported candidates. In : the first, Finigan led into the straight from Baccarat, Show Boy, Great Victory, General Argosy, Idle Jest, and Detract. The run home had not been Jong in progress before Baccarat reached the front, and although challenged Strongly by Idle Jest, he held on for a comfortable win. Detract was finishing on in third place, half• a length in front of Loch Lennox, with Fighting Fox, Beaugency, and General Argosy following. In the second division, Post Graduate led into the straight from All's Fair Our Style, Rival Chase, and Arvastep, but with a furlong to go, Money Lender, who was slow early, reached the front, and carried on to win comfortably from Arvastep, who made up a lot of ground over the last furlong. Night Owl, always well up, was a close third, a length in front of Rival Chase, with Post J Graduate and Lochrea next. |
Unlucky Favourite
Super was sent out first choice for, the Sumner Handicap, but after | being fairly well placed over the first, three furlongs, he again ran wide at j the turn into the straight and lost; a good deal of ground. Beau Ideal, was the early leader and he turned for home three lengths in front of j Volomai, with Mr Buzz, Deficiency, I Coral Arc, and Super next. The lead- i ers were bunched commencing the j final furlong, but a little further on ; Coral Are drew to the front, and was | soon challenged by Helio, who came ! from the middle of the field and finished the better of the pair, but, failed to make up the leeway. The Grate was finishing on into third place, a length in front of Battle Strife and Ned Kelly. Super was next, in front of Broiefort Prince and Mr Buzz. Coral Arc met with a hostile reception when returning to the enclosure. The opening event, the Aylesbury Hack Handicap, was run in two divisions. In the first, the Trenthamtrained Pierre led throughout. He was followed into the straight by Cricket Field, Carry On, and Courier. Carry On made up some leeway in the run home, but was unable to trouble the leader, who had a very convincing win. Cricket Field was a close third, getting up- to beat Solimbine by a head. Profane, Crease, Marut, apd Bragden were next. . The second division provided a spectacular finish. Sally Gold soon opened up a break from a good start, and had a clear lead entering the straight from Confidence Trick, Eulogize, Prefect, and Piesolute. The run home had not long been in progress before Resolute drew to the ■front and he carried on for an attractive win. There was a close tussle for the minor places, Peridot beating Military Chief by a head, with a similar margin to Eulogize and Ballochmyle. There was again a large attendance and the totalisator handled £147,963 10s, compared with £134,143 10s on ■the corresponding day last year. The weather was fine, but a cold easterly
wind marred conditions. The track was in splendid order and provided fast going for tihs time of the year. Remaining results: — Beaufort Steeplechase, of £lOOO.
