CHALLENGE TO CHIFLEY ON THE BANK ISSUE
(Rec. 11 a.m.)
BRISBANE, This Day
The Federal Country Party leader, Mr A. W. Fadden, has challenged the Prime Minister, Mr Chifley, to submit the bank nationalisation issue to the electors. He said it was unfortunate for Australia that Mr Chifley, because of his characteristic stubbornness, refused to accept the High Court’s latest rebuff to his socialistic plans. “Instead of spending the taxpayers’ money appealing to the Privy Council on the bank nationalisation issue, Mr Chifley should appeal to the electors,” he added. “I challenge him to take this course -of action, either by tendering the resignation of his Government 'forthwith and submitting the question to the people at a general election, or by holding an early referendum. These afford the Government simple and democratic ways of obtaining the view of the Australian people on this very important issue,”
