WIDE DEVASTATION FROM FLOODS IN BORDER COUNTRY
(Rec. 11.50 a.m.)
LONDON, August 15
Army reconnaissance teams in the flood-stricken Scottish border country reported widespread devastation in the wake of the receding floodwaters. Troops, equipped with Bailey bridges and engineering equipment are standing by to start relief work.
One hundred families at Haddington are sleeping in the Town Hall. The pollution of reservoirs and storage tanks has deprived many villages of water.
Twenty-one road and rail bridges have been destroyed or severely damaged. Scotland’s largest blanket factory was completely wrecked with a loss estimated at L 250,000. A thick layer of silt covers thousands of rich agricultural land, with the destruction of large areas- of crops.
