Service Honours Presented At Fire Brigade Banquet

Service honours were presented to a number of members of the Greymouth Fire Brigade at the annual banquet held at the Central Fire Station on Saturday evening. Superintendent T. Mclntosh presided over a large gathering, which included the Deputy-Mayor, Cr J. E. Stokes, and other councillors, members of the Fire Board, Government departments and visitors, as well as members of the Cobden, Grey Railway, Kumara and Runanga brigades.' The feature of the programme was the presentation to the brigade by Mr R. Tyler of a hand-painted honours board, on which were inscribed the names of brigade members who served in the past war. Thanks were returned by Superintendent Mclntosh, who congratulated Mr Tyler on the fine design of the board, which, he said, would be placed in a prominent position in the station. Service honours were presented by the chairman of the Gfeymouth Fire Board, Mr J. Walton, to the following members: — Five-Year Medals:—Firemen L. Stewart, J. Brennan and G. Kirk. Two-Year Silver Bars: —Branchman Hogarth (7 years’ service), Fireman T. Shaw (7 years), Branchman F. McEnaney (19 years), Motorman J. W. Grant (21 years) and Fireman G. Batty (25 years). The recipients of the medals made brief replies, after which a toast to them was proposed by Superintendent Mclntosh.

The following toasts were honoured during the evening:—The King (propossed by the chairman); The United Fire Brigades’ Association and the West Coast Association (proposed by Mr A. Tyler— responded to by Past President J. Walton and Vice President W. McNabb); Mayor and Councillors (Fireman G. Batty—Crs J. Stokes and W. Herring); Greymouth Fire Brigade (Mr W. Clarke—Supt. Mclntosh); Public Service (Mr T. Blackie—lnspector M. J. Angland); Greymouth Fire Board (Motorman J. W. Grant—Mr J. Stokes); Visitors (Deputy Superintendent G. Nelson — M. R. Stewart and T. Johns); Artists (Foreman Lindbom —Mr J. Paterson); Ladies (Foreman W. Williams—Mr F. Costello); and the press. Items were contributed by the following:—Messrs J. Paterson, W. Williams, J. Beban, J. Richardson, W. Hutton, W. McGrath, J. Boucher, P. Coll, W. Connors, M. J. Angland and F. Costello. Community singing was led by Mr W. Williams.
