MILITARY CLASH WITH BANDITS NEAR SINGAPORE
(Rec. 10.30 a.m.) SINGAPORE. August 8. One bandit was killed and several were wounded when bandit snipers clashed with military and police advancing from Gua Musang today. One Gurkha in the military party died in action. The bandits had tried unsuccessfully to ambush the military party. The wounded bandits were taken away by their companions. The military found and burned down the bandits’ food store. The British Colonial Office announced in London that Mr William Nicol Gray has been appointed police commissioner for Malaya, succeedihg Mr H. B. Langworthy, who has resigned because of ill-health. Mr Gray was inspector-general of police in Palestine at the termination of the British mandate. He studied and practised estate management and farming in Australia and Britain. ,
