Land Clearing Costs
Sir, —I read with interest what the farmers at their Westport meeting had to say about land for the soldiers, etc. There is another question which they have not considered, that is, if a soldier purchases uncleared land now and clears it at the present rate of clearing, either by his own manual labour or someone else’s labour (for which he will have to pay twice as much per day or week as he would in normal times) he, or anyone else, whether soldier or not, will “fall in” heavily later on if he tries to sell, or, even if he does not sell, he will wake up to the fact that he has paid twice too much for clearing his land if he clears it at the present time. No farmer today is able to pay the terrific high clearing cost whether by using his own labour, which could be used elsewhere, or someone else’s. labour. Yours, etc., LOOK AHEAD. Blaketown,.. June 7.
