SOVIET PLANS FOR NEW CURRENCY FOR GERMANY
LONDON, June 5. • “It is reliably learned that the Soviet Military Governor in Germany (Marshal Sokolovsky) has called a special meeting of his leading financial and political advisers at his Berlin headquarters for Monday,” says Pouter’s Berlin correspondent. “German political circles close to Soviet headquarters indicated that the meeting would decide the Soviet attitude on currency reform. “Political quarters in Berlin forecast a last-minute Soviet readiness to reopen four-Power discussions on currency reform for all Germany. They quote as significant a leading article in the Soviet-licensed Berlin paper “Nachtexpress’ appealing for a meeting of the Allied Control Council before June 15, which is considered in Berlin to be the deadline for currency reform in the Western zones.”
