MR NASH SAYS MR HOLLAND MISQUOTED HAVANA CHARTER
WELLINGTON, April 6. “There is nothing in the text of the Havana Charter which will interfere with the stabilisation policy of the Government,” said the Minister of Customs (Mr W. Nash) tonight, commenting on a statement made by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr S. G. Holland). “Mr Holland has misquoted what was said,” said Mr Nash tonight. “Mr Holland may have been reading an inaccurate report, but if he will check up with those present at the interview he will find that the statement on subsidies was that another clause in the Havana Charter dealt with the limitation of subsidy, and these could not be used to sell goods overseas at prices below domestic values in the country of origin. This is the direct opposite to the alleged quotation used by Mr Holland. “The text of the particular article (number 26) reads: ‘No member shall grant directly or indirectly any subsidy on the export of any product or establish or'maintain any other ; system which subsidy or system re- : suits in the sale of such product for export at a price lower than the comparable price charged for the like J product to the buyer in the domestic j market, due allowance being made ’ for the difference in conditions and 1 terms of sale, for differences in taxation, and for other differences affect- 1 ing price comparability.’ ” t
