SPORTING Sidelights On Racing At The Nelson J.C. Meeting
[SPECIAL TO STAB] NELSON, This Day. Falconbridge was withdrawn from ■the principal event at the Nelson meeting on Monday as his trainer, C. Dawson, considered his task on a hard track with 9,0 was too severe.
Royal Robe, the principal winner on Monday, was taken from Riccarton to Nelson by the hurdle horseman, K. Thomson, who, however, was unable to look after him. Thomson suffered an injury to an ankle in a fall at his lodgings on Friday and this will probably keep him out of the saddle for a few weeks. Supporters on the place machine of the bracketed pair, Veine d’Or and Deep Sea, who finished first and third in a two-place dividend field in the Stoke Handicap, lost about a third of their outlay. Deep Sea looked like repeating his first day’s second placing to his stablemate, but he weakened in the last few strides. Both horses have been sent on to Blenheim.
Successful Trip The Riccarton trainers, Register and Hanrahan, had two more winners, Pedantic and Kinlass, on Monday, and Romantic had a third placing, making their total for the meeting five wins and one third. The fourth member of the team, the two-year-old Pink Coat gelding, Chai-
finch, was given a race in each day’s maiden event, but did not show up. He was taken on the trip for education purposes and may do better at Blenheim. Terrific 4 , a two-year-old colt by Finis, won a division of the maiden event on the first day at Nelson, but was decisively beaten by Helenette in a sihiilar event on Monday. Although on the small side Terrific is likely to reach good class. Helenette is a three-year-old filly by Sly Fox from Helen Quex, and is trained by B. Lumsden at Otaki. Easy Victory Culloden Moor, the winner of the Champion Hack Cup on Monday, is a five-year-old gelding by SolicitorGeneral from Disguise, and is trained by P. Williams at Otaki. This was one of the easiest wins of the meeting and he should again make good at Blenheim. Mr Buzz, owned by Mr J. L. Pugh, did not start on the first day at Nelson because of soreness, but was produced on Monday. He was palpably sore when paraded in the birdcage and again at the starting point and it would not have been surprising if he had been ordered back by the stewards. He was last to move off and got further away as the race progressed, finishing a long way in the rear.
