CIVIL SERVICE PURGE IN BRITAIN

LONDON, April 1. The British Treasury has announced the names of three formal civil servants who will be members of a committee to consider the cases of civil servants who are suspected of Communist or Fascist associations. They are Sir Thomas Gardiner (chairman), a former Director-Gen-eral of the Office; Sir Maurice Holmes, formerly Permanent Secretrv to the Ministry of Education; and Sir Frederick Leggett, formerly Deputy Secretary to the Ministry of Labour. The committee will advise Ministers about Communists and Fascists working in Government departments and, in extreme cases, dismissals will take place. . The Treasury said that if a civil servant challenged his transfer or dismissal, or if there appeared to be some doubt about- a case in which a Minister might take action, all the evidence would go to the committee, which would carry out an impartial inquiry.
