NO DISCOVERIES OF URANIUM: ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION’S REPORT

WASHINGTON, April 1. Commander Gerald Ketchum, leader of the United States Navy’s recent Antarctic expedition, reported today that the expedition found no deposits of uranium or. other minerals of commercial value. He added that his two ice-breakers brought back more than two tons of rocks which were taken to Syracuse University for research. The United Press comments: “Speculation that the Antarctic Continent harboured huge deposits of uranium mounted after an Australian explorer had reported that the south polar area resembled Canada’s Arctic regions, which are now a prime source of atomic material. His report touched off a six-nation race to the Antarctic.

“The British sent a secret expedition to occupy the United States base held by Admiral Richard Byrd in 1941. Russia, Argentina, Chile, and Norway also joined in the chase. There has been no report on their findings.”
