HIGHER SALARIES FOR SAMOA’S PUBLIC SERVANTS

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Public Service Commission’s approval of substantial salary increases for public servants in Samoa was announced at a meeting of the national executive committee of the Public Service Association. The increases are designed to help to offset the rising cost of living for both native-born and New Zealand recruited staff. The new .scales are those recommended by a joint committee comprising two Government representatives and- the general secretary of the association, Mr J. Turnbull, which visited Samoa last October. It was stated that while the increases would be received with satisfaction living costs had continued to rise since the recommendations were made. In four months flour had increased from 7d to Is per lb and bread prices, which were Is 2d for a 21b loaf, had doubled. It was resolved that the committee be requested to arrange for the collection of cost-of-living data in order that Samoan salaries could readily be adjusted without the need for special inquiries.
