MR NASH STILL BUSY ON TAXATION ISSUES

(Rec. 11 a.m.) WASHINGTON, March 16.

A convention between the United States and New Zealand for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of the evasion of income taxes was signed at the State Department today by the Secretary of State, General Marshall, and the New Zealand Minister of Finance, Mr Nash.

The convention provides that on ratification it will be effective in respect to United States tax for the taxable ygars beginning on or after January 1 in the calender year in which ratification occurs. As to New Zealand tax, the convention becomes effective for the year of the assessment beginning on April 1 following the calendar year in which the convention is ratified. Mr Nash told Mr Marshall: “We know the situation for months and years ahead will be such that the closer we get together with you, Australia and Canada in the Pacific, the better it will be for all of us.”
