GENERAL NEWS Fire Protection In State Buildings

New fire protection measures for Government buildings have been instituted by the Public Service Commission after receiving requests from the executive officers of the New Zealand Public Service Association, states the Public Service Journal. It is intended that, the installation and maintenance of fire-fighting, escape and alarm equipment is to be the responsibility of the Public Works Department.—(P.A.) St Patrick’s Day Flags were flown on public buildings in Greymouth today to mark the observance of St Patrick’s Day, but the only formal celebration of the event will be the ball to be held this evening. Other functions in connection with the anniversary will be held tomorrow night and on Saturday—the annual Irish national concert and sports meeting respectively. Pupils of the Marist Brothers’ ajjd Convent schools in the district were given their customary holiday today. Rural Petrol Needs, Federated Farmers will be asked to bring pressure to bear to have control df petrol rationing decentralised and placed in the hands of competent district committees, similar to those which operated during the war. This decision was made at a meeting o'f the Otago sub-executive of r ederated Farmers in Dunedin yesterday. - It was also decided that the chairman of the National Aid for Britain Council (Mr F. P. Walsh) be informed immediately that the Otago province is experiencing difficulty with petrol supplies for primary production, those particularly affected being transport operators.—(P.A.)

£150,000 Damage in Factory Fire The total damage to stock, machinery and buildings destroyed in the fire which swept through the confectionery factory of Heards, Ltd., Auckland, on Monday evening is now estimated at more than £150,000. Fire insurance experts are still working on an assessment of the damage, and the final figure may exceed the estimate. No arrangements for the replacement of the stock or machinery had been made yet, said Mr J. W. Weston, manager of Heards, Ltd. New : machinery would probably have to be imported to replace that destroyed. Mr Watson said the present staff would remain in the firm’s employ while its future plans were being decided. —(P.A.)

Mass will be celebrated on next Sunday (Palm Sunday) March 21, at Kokiri, 8 a.m. and at Ruru, 10 a.m. — Advt.
