RUNANGA NEW SUBSIDIES PAYABLE FOR SCHOOL EQUIPMENT

The Runanga School Committee at its meeting last evening received advice from the Education Department that subsidies of £1 for £1 are now available on voluntary contributions for the purchase of the following: Books for school use, film strip projectors, gramophones, infant apparatus, movie film projectors, pianos, playground equipment, radio sets, typewriters and sewing machines. It was stated that such subsidies are available only on cash actually raised by committees or received during the lifetime of donors, and that they are not payable on gifts under wills or gifts of property. The Canterbury Education Board advised that the rate of the grant for “other objects” payable to school committees has been increased, the new rate being as follows. —Oneroomed schools 9s 2d a head; tworoomed, 8s 2d; three-roQmed, ss; four, five and six-roomed, 4s 2d; seven and eight-roomed, 3s 2d; larger schools 2s 6d a head. It was stated that the board was also considering a scheme whereby assistance would be given to committees towards the cost of mowing grounds and cutting hedges. The headmaster presented the following report, which was approved: The roll is 230, slightly higher than at the opening date last year. Probably due to the knowledge that a lost month should be caught up if possible the weekly average attendance has been good, the percentages of attendance being 93 per cent, and 95 per cent. The school grounds are taking on a better appearance, a start having been made with the painting of the school both inside and out. Good progress is being made and when completed the only job remaining to be carried out will be the relaying of the playing area. School supplies are coming to hand better than was the case last year and I do not anticipate any Ganger that all requisites will not cw.ie to hand shortly. The authority your committee granted some time ago to obtain jerseys for the football teams and gym frocks foi’ the girls’ basketball teams is causing great difficulty in fulfilment.

On the opening of school I circularised the parents, with your chairman’s approval, suggesting a school uniform. I am happy to be able to report that this suggestion met with ready response and the dress of the pupils is already showing a marked improvement and uniformity. I desire to thank the parents for the way they have met us in this respect. The inter-schools athletic sports will be held in Greymouth on April 23 and arrangements are well on for the commencement of the winter competitions in football and basketball at the beginning of the second term.
