Labour Federation: Further Meeting On Carpenters' Dispute
WELLINGTON, March 14. The National Council of the Federation of Labour will seek a further conference with the Prime Minister (Mr P. Fraser) to discuss the Dominion-wide carpenters’ dispute. This was one of the decisions reached at a six-hour meeting of the council today. The resolutions made by the council at the conference were: — 1. That this council meet the Prime Minister and the Cabinet, but before meeting Cabinet the council discuss and decide a policy to be formulated. 2. That when the council meets the Prime Minister and Cabinet it press for a tribunal or -some other means for a settlement of the dispute under the I.C. and A. Act, or otherwise, other than going before Mr Justice Tyndall. ’ The meeting, went into committee almost immediately this morning, and no other statement than the terms of the resolutions was made available to the press tpnight. Members of the -National Council will remain in Wellington in the medhtime, and it is understood that another meeting will be held tomorrow. Twenty-six members of a possible 2.7 were present at today's meeting. They were seven members of the national executive, and one representative of each of 19 Trades Councils. Also present was the secretary of the New’ Zealand Carpenters’ Union (Mr R. Stanley). When a motion to exclude the press was put to the meeting soon after the council met at 10 o’clock this morning, a point of order was raised by Mr A. ■ Drennan, who referred to a decision 1 made at the last meeting of the council to allow the press to be present. ■ After some discussion that, motion was changed to read that the meet- ' ing go into committee, and this was carried by 14 votes to 11.
