INCREASE IN CRIME IN BULLER AREA
After a period of two years, with an almost total absence of crime in the Buller district and'in which no person ever received a sentence of imprisonment, the Westport police have had a comparatively busy time in recent weeks in handling cases, states the Westport News, and since Decembei- 16 three men have been sent to goal for various terms while another was remanded to Christchurch for sentence on a charge of theft. The first case in December, which resulted in a term of imprisonment, concerned an old man who was convicted of using bad language. Othei; ca.ses were assault and other offences by two youths; theft of bonds and cash from a Westport hotel by a seaman; issuing of valueless cheques by a Balclutha resident. A minor case of assault for which two country youths were charged; two charges of attempted suicide, and two charges against two visitors I‘rdm Wellington of false pretences. Another charge of sly-grogging, very strange to a district such as Buller, was met by a substantial fine.
