WATERSIDE UNION DECIDES TO TAKE LEGAL ACTION
WELLINGTON, March 11.
The national executive - of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union has instructed its solicitor (Mr R. E. Fawcett, of Auckland) to institute proceedings immediately against the Waterfront Industry Commission and/or the Union Steam Ship Company, Ltd. The action will be based on steps taken against the watersiders during the Mount Park dispute. This was announced by the national president of the union (Mr H. Barnes) at the end of a three-day meeting of the national council of the union today. Mr Barnes said that he hoped that steps would be taken to cxnedite a legal hearing. “We arc'"fully satisfied that this hearing will not only justify the action of the watersiders, but will give a much-needed and overdue exposure of the bureaucratic incompetency of the commission,” said Mr Barnes. . A meeting of the national council of the union has been called for March 22, when the whole dispute and the union’s attitude towards the commission will be discussed again.
