SPORTING Spare Part Favoured In Centennial Cup At Dunedin Tomorrow

The Dunedin Centennial Cup, carrying a stake of £4OOO with a trophy valued at £2OO for the owner of the Winning horse will be decided at Wingatui tomorrow on the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting. Pre-post calculations have covered a wide range, most of the 1 7 horses engaged being accorded a chance in some quarter, but most discussions have centred on the prospects of the Wellington Cup winner, Spare Part, Indian Dawn and the hardy Howe, who was deprived of the Auckland Cup in a set of unfortunate circumstances. , , Lately, too, there has been increasing interest in Spare Part s stablemate, Sir Garnish, who capped a series of good performances with a splendid trial at Gore last Saturday. The public may sum up m favour of Spare Part, Indian Dawn and Howe,

Howe heads the list with 9.1 and he has drawn No. 1 at the barrier. He will be ridden by R. J. Mackie, one of the best of the Dominion’s horsemen, and well acquainted with any peculiarities Howe may have. Howe has. built up a great record in recent months, one of. his best being in the Auckland Cup in which he was first past the post. In a truly run race he is almost certain to be right in’ the limelight at the finish. It will be recalled that he was finishing over everything in the Summer Handicap at Trentham, the race win by Indian Dawn from Howe and Royal Tan.

Signal Officer, a proved stayer, has 8.11 and will be ridden by C. T. Wilson. He raced unsuccessfully at Ellerslie, but he has never shown a liking for that course and will be right at home at Wingatui. He must be conceded a good chance.

Trentham Victory Then comes the Wellington Cup winner, Spare Part, with 8.8. He disappointed a host of admirers When he failed in the Summer Handicap at Trentham, but backers will probably remember his brilliant victory in the cup at Trentham against his failure. Spare Part is likely to be favourite. He will be piloted by A. E. Didham. Indian Dawn is probably a better horse now than When she was beaten in the Wellington Cup, ih which she did not get a good run. She made amends for that failure when she won the Summer Handicap later at the meeting. That was an excellent performance and the Nizami mare appeals as having a first class chance at Wingatui .L. J. Ellis, who was in the saddle at Trentham will again be on top tomorrow and Ellis has few peers as a horseman over the longer journeys. Detain broke a run of “outs” when he won the Midsummer Handicap at Riccarton recently from Authentic and Silver Link, but it was not in dress circle company. He is not yet a proved stayer. Royal Tan is one of the best handicappers in the country and he is not overburdened with 7.13. He was given a chance to freshen up after racing at Trentham, where his best effort was third to Indian Dawn and Howe in the Summer Handicap. He paraded in bright order at Omoto last Saturday week, running second to Martial Note over a mile and a quarter, and that outing should put him in top form for tomorrow. There was something disappointing in the fact that he was beaten by Martial Note but the race was run to suit Martial Note and definitely did not favour the chance of a dyed-in-the-wool stayer like Royal Tan. He will be ridden tomorrow by C. C. Stokes. Good Stayers Eriskay has run some good races this season, including fifth in the New Zealand Cup, but she gives the impression, on her form to date, of falling short of the best class. There is little doubt about her staying ability. Authentic, another proved stayer, ran second to Detain at Riccarton recently, but he hardly makes strong appeal here. He has failed previously in the best class. . Among the lighter-weighted division none appeals more than Sir Garnish, and the way he won the Waikaka Handicap ’at Gore last week stamped him as a real stayer and more than an outside prospect in the big race at Wingatui tomorrow. He will be ridden by an apprentice, C. Cassidy, who was successful on him at Gore. Many in the south regard him as at least the equal of Spare Part and if this opinion is based on “inside'’ information, Sir Garnish must be accorded a royal chance tomorrow with only 7.0. Thornbridge has a stayer’s chance. He looked in first class order at Omoto when raced in the Hannan Memorial, and that race should have sharpened him up considerably. He

showed promise last season of developing into a good, stayer. Fine Night, Kartikeya and Sea Power (a winner over a mile and a half at Gore) make most appeal of the remainder. The favourites may be Spare Part, Indian Dawn and Howe with Sir Garnish the ■ best backed of the lighter-weighted division. The track is likely to be easy. The win-and-place system of betting will be used and- the following horses should attract attention:—
