SUPPORT FOR THE APPOINTMENT OF DR BEEBY

(P.A.) WANGANUI, Feb. 24. “I was disappointed at the attitude adopted by some boards in regard to the appointment of the Director of Education in New Zealand (Dr C. E. Beeby) as Assistant Director-General of UNESCO,” said the chairman of the Wanganui Education Board (Mr W. B. Tennent, of Palmerston North), at a meeting of the board today. Mr Tennent said that at the present time, UNESCO was vital in the interests of Deace. Millions of children in Europe had suffered because of the war, and unless something was done to restore order educationally, the future would be discouraging. While not agreeing with everything Dr Beeby had done in the educational field, Mr Tennent said he would support the appointment, and moved that the board congratulate Dr Beeby and also Mr A. F. McMurtrie, who had been appointed acting-Director of Education. The motion was seconded by Mr E. R. Hodge and carried. Mr McMurtrie was formerly a chief inspectox’ in Wanganui.
