BRITAIN’S ADVANCE PAYMENT FOR ARGENTINE FOOD
LONDON, February 24. Britain had agreed to pay Argentina £110,000,000 in advance for. food and feeding stuffs under the BritishArgentine trade agreement, said the Minister of Economic Affairs (Sir Stafford Cripps) in the House of Commons. The advance payment was necessary because Argentina had not sufficient sterling to pay £150,000,000 for the British-owned railways and also support its banking operations. Sir Stafford Cripps said that the prices Britain was paying for Argentine goods were rather higher than under the previous agreement, because of the sharply rising market.
