‘Time-bomb’ Box Causes Sensation In London Office
(Rec. 12.15 p.m.) LONDON, February 23
Following a telephone warning to the Colonial Office Research Department by a voice with a foreign accent, Scotland Yard officers rushed to the building and discovered what is described as a time-bomb in the hall. The police removed a small box, the contents of which Home Office experts are examining. The building is opposite the Houses of Parliament.
The guards on all Government buildings were “alerted” after the discovery of the box. The box contained two large dry-cell batteries, attached by wires to glass jar containing fluid. A woman lift attendant discovered the box behind a door in the entrance hall.
The box had a Jewish mark on it. The box was taken to Woolwich Arsenal for tests to ascertain whether the contraption could explode.
