MR CHIFLEY PERMITS TENNIS COUNCIL TO SPEND OWN MONEY

The Prime Minister, Mr Chifley, will allow the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia to spend up to 10,000 dollars of its credits in America on the 1948 Davis Cup challenge. A Treasury official said Mr Chifley was prepared to make 7000 dollars available for the tour and another 3000 dollhrs if the team reached the challenge round. The Treasury official asked the president of the Lawn Tennis Association Council, Sir Norman Brookes, to arrange for the return to Australia as soon as possible of the 23,000 dollars of Lawn Tennis Association credits in America.
The Australian Davis Cup team is expected to be announced next week.
