Lady Bartlett has been with the 8.8. C. six years, and uses her maiden name of Mary Malcolm. She is the only daughter of Sir lan and Lady Malcolm, of Poltalloch, Argyllshire. When Winifred Shotter decided to leave television and . return to the stage there were 708 applicants for her job as announcer. Lady Bartlett, wife of Sir Basil Bartlett, actor, novelist, playwright, bridge expert, and wartime intelligence officer, did not apply. Mr Norman Collins, television chief since last month, asked her to make a test.

Petite Lady Bartlett is vivacious, dark-haired, and dark-eyed. Hitherto the ideal television girl has been regarded as blonde or fair-haired. Lady Bartlett lives at Suningdale. Her daughters are aged six and two.
