MAGISTRATE FOR WESTLAND WANTED
An effort is being made by the Westland District Law Society to secure the appointment of a resident stipendiary magistrate for the West Coast and Buller areas. At a recent meeting of the Westport branch of the society, the following resolutions were passed and will be forwarded to the Minister of Justice: — - 1. That this branch join with the Westland District Law Society in the protest against the abolition of the West Coast Magistrate’s Court circuit, and is of the opinion that a resident magistrate is needed on the West Coast circuit; that this district cannot be satisfactorily served from Nelson; that it is desirable to revert to fortnightly sittings, because court business may be expected to increase under the new Magistrate’s Court Act, and, further, that the proposed fixtures for Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning at Westport are most unsatisfactory. 2. That the L.R.C. Trades Council and Miners’ Union be asked to protest to the Minister and enlist the support of the local member of Parliament and members of the Legislative Council.
