BRADMAN TO RETIRE AFTER ENGLISH TOUR
(Recd. 11.40 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day.
Australia’s greatest batsman and test captain, Don Bradman, announced today that he would retire from first c«lass crickpt after this year’s tour of England. Bradman, now 39, said he would accept the captaincy of the Australian team to tour England this year. Bradman’s appearance in the fifth test against India beginning today will be his last in first class cricket in Australia. Bradman said he had told the Australian selectors of his decision. He added: “I’m reluctant to undertake
another tour at my age. It will be a heavy responsibility, but I will undertake the responsibility if I am asked to tour England. I feel that this would be my last opportunity to be of service to the game which has played such a big part in my life.” Bradman began his test cricket career in Brisbane in the first test against England in 1928-29. He has broken practically every cricket record. He has made 37 double centuries in first-class cricket.
