IRISH PEOPLE GO TO GENERAL ELECTION POLL
(Rec. 11.45 a.m.) DUBLIN, February 4.
The Irish people voted today in the general election. Whether Mi’ De Valera, whose party has held office since 1932, will be returned again will not be known until Saturday. Even the composition of the Dail will not be known, as the poll in one area, which returns five members, has been postponed until late this pionth because of the death of one candidate. The election campaign reached a climax last night when 100,000 went to hear Mr De Valera speak. He came to the platform escorted by guards of honour carrying torches made of turf sods soaked in paraffin. Half a mile away almost as big a crowd listened to Mr Sean Macßride, leader of the New Republican Party, which is considered the most serious threat to the Government. Its programme is to cut completely adrift from Britain’s and introduce a separate currency. Mr Macßride has 93 candidates opposing Mr De Valera’s 118.
