CRICKET NO PLAY YESTERDAY IN SECOND TEST

SYDNEY, December 15. No play was possible today in the second cricket test between Australia and India. In the three days of the match so far there has been only 6-| hours’ play. Heavy rain last night and a steady drizzle this morning left the ground waterlogged. With water still lying on the wicket, a brief inspection by the captains at 10 a.m. resulted in a decision to inspect again at 2 p.m. At this hour, as the captains inspected the wicket, light rain was falling. The decision was left to the umpires, who had no hesitation in abandoning play for the day. Australia, with one wicket down for 28, still needs 161 to pass India’s first innings score of 188. Hokitika And Cobden Defeat United Teams

Good individual scores by several players were features of the women’s cricket match between United B and Cobden on Saturday. Cobden won by 23 runs on the first innings. Batting first, United scored 57 (D. Horrack 15, E. Dewar 11; I. Leach, four for 24, and M. Vaughan three for 11.) Cobden replied with 80 (I. Leach 22, H. Jackson 22, J. Ross 21; N. Thomas, three for 28, D. Horrack, three for 28, and L. Newcombe two for 9.) United A was dismissed for 47 in its match against Hokitika on Saturday and was defeated by 34 runs. Hokitika batted first, securing 81 (I. Baird 37, M. Instone 21; M. Cornish, five for 32, C. Calder four for 15). United made 47 (R. Finnerty 8; A. McMurtrie three for 6, I. Baird four for 9, and M. Instone two for 9).
