"Tied” Votes
Sir,—The only factor which could give the Labour candidate reason for confidence would be the guarantee of enough controlled votes to outweigh the votes of those who can choose for themselves in this byelection contest. There are a number of big unions in Westland, and in the past at any rate, it has been sug-
gested that most of their members voted Labour. But in an electorate with about 13,000 electors on the roll, there cannot be 6,500 tied votes. The legend of Labour invincibility is a myth. Anyone who has heard both' candidates address meetings must have formed the opinion that Lockington cannot lose. Anyone who seeks release from the straight-jacket of Socialist control, and relief from the dread of ultimate labour direction, can take heart and go along and vote. It will not be in vain, this time.—Yours, etc., EBB TIDE. Greymouth, November 14.
