OBITUARY Mr Hopeni Meihana

The death occurred at the Arahura Pa yesterday of Mr Hopeni Meihana (Mason), aged 70 years. A native of Arthurstown, he attended the Kanieri State school, and for _ many years was engaged in sawmilling and farming and, prior to his death he was engaged in the whitebait fishing industry. In 1903 he married the second daughter of the paramount chief, Hoani Tainui. As a young man, Mr Meihana was a keen athlete and a prominent footballer, being a member of the West Coast Rugby touring team in 1905 and captain of the Koiterangi Football Club in 1911. Mr Meihana is survived by his wife, eight daughters and five sons.
