GENERAL NEWS Westport Complains Of Cargo Delays
Delays in getting cargo from the North Island to Westport were discussed at the monthly meeting of the , Buller Progress League, when it was said that business people in Westport were often greatly inconvenienced by J the ’ long waits for cargo. Members said that while some Union Company vessels brought cargo to Westport at times, considerable quantities were left in storage at Wellington, sometimes for months. It might be worthwhile for Buller trades people to purchase a small vessel to bring cargo from Wellington and back-load with coal, it was suggested. Gift Parcels to Britain 1
Advice received by the General Post Office, Wellington, yesterday, stated that 24,586 food parcels, weighing 223,5561b5, had arrived in the United Kingdom on November 3. The parcels were from all districts of the South Island, except Nelson, were posted during the period August 21 to September 18, and were despatched by the vessel Kaipara from Lyttelton. Christmas Box
Clerical workers on the staff of the Grey Electric Power Board will receive something in the nature >of an early Christmas box, for, according to information given members of'the board last evening, approval has finally been given for an increase in wages. This increase has been sought since last May, when the board gave its approval, and, as it has been made retrospective to April 1, members of the staff will receive considerable sums in back-pay. The position in regard to members of the out-door staff, it was stated, was not so good, finality not having been reached yet in connection with their agreement. Hotels And Tearooms
An attempt in the Legislative Council to eliminate from the Masterton Licensing Trust Bill a provision allowing the trust to establish suitable places within the district for the sale or supply of refreshments other than intoxicating liquor was beaten by 15 votes to 2 on a division in the committee stages yesterday, and the Bill was passed without amendment. The amendment was moved by Sir William Perry (Wellington), who emphasised that he was concerned principally with the provision of the Bill giving power to set up tearooms, restaurants, and milk bars in premises other than hotel premises in which liquor was sold. It’s wonderful having people to stay over the holidays, but the big enjoyment is having everything with that Spring freshness look about the whole house.
