FIRE AT TRENTHAM RACECOURSE

WELLINGTON, This ay. There was a sensational incident ’ between the first and second races at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting at Trentham this morning. Straw which had been spread in the birdcage caught fire and the blaze was momentarily out of control, threatening the stewards’ stand. Smoke from the blazing straw and the birdcage fence poured across the track and obscured the horses which were at the post for the second event. A high wind carried the flames away from the stand, towards the track, and this probably prebably prevented serious damage. With the arrival of a fire brigade, the fire was brought under control, but' broke out again just as the field 'for the second race was at the starting barrier, and further 'efforts were required from the brigade and club officials. The start of the race was considerably delayed.
